Business professor Robert Soroka is known to be a dynamic, charismatic speaker with industry experience and an eye for business ideas. Born in Montreal, Soroka gained a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill and an MBA from Concordia, and discovered a passion for teaching in the years following.
Soroka has a varied background as a criminal lawyer, professor, marketing analyst, TV and radio personality, consultant, and actor and playwright. He began his career in industry, working as a marketing and financial analyst for chain-store retailers. After earning his Juris Doctor degree from the State University of New York, he practiced criminal law in Buffalo, NY.
Soroka resumed his teaching career upon his return to Montreal and now teaches business and law courses at Concordia University, McGill University and at Dawson College. His teaching was recognized when he received Concordia University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997 and the McGill University Management Undergraduate Students’ Teaching Award in 2009. As well, he is a private consultant for both public and private organizations.
Soroka has also made more than 1000 television and radio guest appearances, and was the Consumer Cop on Montreal Today (CTV) and the Consumer Correspondent on This Morning Live (Global Television) for 5 years. Robert’s main passion is the theatre; he has authored several plays, all of which have been produced.
Soroka’s philosophy on teaching is simple: “Reviewing a text chapter is easy; stoking a student’s passion is what motivates me and what defines my teaching style.”
For Fall 2009, he’ll be teaching online courses within the Management and Marketing diplomas. To his prospective students, he has one piece of advice. “Do not limit the boundaries of study to what is written between the covers of a text. Business is a dynamic, evolving discipline. Come to class with an open mind, prepared to challenge and be challenged. “
